Modern Upgrades for the AKS-74U

The AKS-74U (*and his hunting version) was developed in the 1970s-80sin the USSR as a compact assault rifle for vehicle crews, aviation personnel, and paratroopers. Structurally and operationally, the AKS-74U (hunting version Vulkan-TK) is nearly identical to the AK-74 but features a shorter barrel, making it more mobile and suitable for concealed carry. As a reliable and easy-to-use weapon, it quickly gained popularity among paratroopers, military personnel, and police.

Nowadays, commanders of units, whose primary duty is not direct engagement in combat but rather directing the actions of personnel, often choose the AKS-74U. Additionally, it is popular among reconnaissance units, sappers, and snipers as a secondary weapon. The availability of a compact assault rifle alongside specialized firearms designed for specific tasks instills confidence during spontaneous engagements, such as in wooded areas.

The purpose of the modern upgrades for the AKS-74U (hunting version for these platforms) is to make this weapon even more convenient for use. Two drawbacks of the standard configuration are addressed:

Moreover, a common modification for theAKS-74U involves installation of a suppressor, but this option comes with its set of inconveniences. Due to the short barrel length, powder gases do not burn completely, and the muzzle flash persists during firing. Similarly, sound suppression is less effective when using a suppressor on the AKS-74U compared to the longer barrel AK-74. Additionally, the use of a suppressor imposes restrictions on automatic fire, with better performance achieved through single-shot firing to prevent quicker fouling of the weapon.
